Individualising Programme Design

It is important for personal trainers to be able to individualise according
to unique needs and requirements of clients, especially those with special
needs and/or those who are high-risk.
One of your successes as a personal trainer is reflected by your client
reaching a point where he or she is comfortable with the changes in his
or her physical self and lifestyle. Maintenance of health and fitness will
eventually become an important, rewarding and exciting time of the rest
of your client’s life.
After completing this chapter, you will be able to:
Understand, adapt and modify programmes in relation to
individuals’ basic ‘likes’ and ‘dislikes’.
Assess fitness using common tests, including the 6-min walking
test for elderly, and PWC170 cycle ergometer test for overweight
individuals.
Understanding general blood pressure status.
Understand programme considerations for special cases such as
overweight, elderly, asthmatics.
Recognise signs and symptoms of overtraining and response
accordingly.
Understand referrals and levels of readiness to help effect and
maintain healthy lifestyle choices.
